Magic: The Gathering Commander players are getting five new ready-to-play decks on Oct. 2, 2026, expanding one of Magic’s most popular ways to play with a lineup built specifically to make Commander easier for new players to enter.
Wizards of the Coast revealed the complete Foundations Commander decklists on Sept. 18 ahead of their release alongside Reality Fracture. The five monocolor decks focus on recognizable strategies including Angels, artifacts, Zombies, Dragons and oversized creatures.
The timing also gives players a reason to revisit some of Commander’s fundamentals: how a 100-card deck works, what a Commander precon is, which cards are currently banned, how the newer Commander Brackets operate and how earlier products such as Phyrexia: All Will Be One and Warhammer 40,000 fit into the format.

MTG Commander Decks Expand With Five Foundations Precons
Unlike a booster-based product that requires players to build a deck before playing, a Commander precon — short for preconstructed deck — arrives as a complete playable deck built around a specific commander and strategy.
Wizards says the new Foundations Commander decks were designed to introduce players to Commander through relatively simple monocolor strategies. Each contains a ready-to-play 100-card deck made up of one traditional foil borderless face commander and 99 non-foil cards, plus 10 double-sided tokens, a reference card and a deck box.
That approach is notable for players learning the format. Running a single color reduces some of the complexity associated with multicolor mana bases while giving each deck a recognizable theme.

Wizards has deliberately separated the five MTG Commander precons into recognizable strategies rather than giving new players five mechanically dense decks to decipher.
What Are MTG Commander Precons?
MTG Commander precons are complete preconstructed Commander decks sold ready to play. Instead of selecting approximately 100 individual cards and constructing a legal deck from scratch, a player can open a precon, use its included commander and begin playing.
Precons have also become starting points for players who enjoy upgrading decks. A player might replace a handful of cards, change the mana base, add stronger synergy pieces or eventually rebuild much of the deck while retaining the original commander.
That makes a precon different from a fixed beginner deck in the traditional sense. It can introduce the rules of Commander on day one while also becoming the foundation of a long-term deckbuilding project.

MTG Commander Rules in 2026: The Basics
Commander has its own deck-construction and gameplay rules. Players building a deck for the first time do not need to memorize every interaction in Magic, but several Commander-specific rules are essential.
Commander in 60 Seconds
100 cards: A Commander deck contains exactly 100 cards, including its commander.
Singleton: Except for basic lands and cards whose own rules allow otherwise, cards cannot share the same English name.
Color identity: Cards in the deck cannot have a color identity outside the commander’s color identity.
40 life: Players normally begin a Commander game with 40 life.
Command zone: The commander begins the game in the command zone.
Commander tax: Each time a commander is cast again from the command zone, its controller pays an additional two generic mana for every previous time it was cast from that zone.
Commander damage: A player who receives 21 points of combat damage from the same commander over the course of a game loses that game.
Color identity is especially important for deck construction. It considers not only a card’s color but also colored mana symbols appearing in its rules text. A deck therefore cannot simply include any card a player owns; its cards must remain within the color identity established by the commander.
The commander itself is normally a legendary creature, although individual Magic cards can contain rules that specifically allow other card types or combinations to function as commanders.
What Are Commander Brackets?
Commander also has an optional system intended to help players communicate what kind of game they want before play begins.
The current Commander Brackets system divides decks into five broad play experiences. Wizards describes the brackets as optional matchmaking and pregame-conversation tools rather than a replacement for the underlying rules of Commander.

Wizards says Brackets 1 through 3 focus on varying levels of socially oriented Commander, while Brackets 4 and 5 move toward high-powered and competitive play.
The system also interacts with a separate list of influential cards called Game Changers. Brackets 1 and 2 exclude Game Changers, Bracket 3 permits up to three, and Brackets 4 and 5 permit them without that numerical restriction. Wizards continues to describe the bracket system as being in beta.
MTG Commander Banlist in 2026: What Changed?
Anyone searching for the MTG Commander banlist should distinguish between cards that are actually banned and cards that may simply be discouraged in lower Commander Brackets.
The major Commander banned-and-restricted announcement on Feb. 9, 2026, did not add new cards to the banned list. Instead, the Commander Format Panel unbanned Biorhythm and unbanned Lutri, the Spellchaser for ordinary Commander deck use.
Lutri remains prohibited specifically as a companion, meaning the card’s 2026 change did not remove every restriction associated with it.
Notable Cards Still Banned in Commander
The current official Commander banned list continues to include cards such as Dockside Extortionist, Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, Nadu, Winged Wisdom, Golos, Tireless Pilgrim, Hullbreacher, Paradox Engine, Primeval Titan and Prophet of Kruphix, among others.
Players should check the current official banned list when constructing or significantly updating a deck, particularly because Commander legality and bracket recommendations are two different concepts.
Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander Decklist — What Were the Two Precons?
Searches for the Phyrexia All Will Be One Commander decklist continue to point to one of Magic’s earlier preconstructed Commander releases.
Phyrexia: All Will Be One, released in February 2023, received two Commander decks: Corrupting Influence and Rebellion Rising.
Corrupting Influence is led by Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa, with Vishgraz, the Doomhive also appearing among its foil legends. The deck uses white, black and green.
Rebellion Rising is a red-white deck led by Neyali, Suns’ Vanguard, with Otharri, Suns’ Glory among its other featured legendary cards.
Each was sold as a complete 100-card Commander deck, making the pair part of the same ready-to-play product tradition continued by the new Foundations Commander lineup.
MTG Warhammer 40K Commander Decks: All Four Precons
Another frequently searched Commander product comes from Magic’s Universes Beyond collaboration with Warhammer 40,000.

Commander’s enormous card pool can be one of its attractions, but it can also make the format intimidating to someone seeing thousands of possible cards and years of preconstructed products for the first time.
Foundations Commander takes a different approach. Instead of requiring a new player to understand a complicated multicolor deck immediately, each of the five precons starts with one color and a familiar Magic theme.
The lineup also creates an upgrade path. A player can begin with Angels, Zombies, artifacts, Dragons or large green creatures and then gradually modify the deck after learning which cards and interactions they enjoy.
