LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officially opened its new Hollywood Area Command on Thursday, giving East Las Vegas a long-planned police facility while also beginning a temporary relocation of the department’s Southeast Area Command.

The facility at 2300 S. Hollywood Blvd. began handling Southeast Area Command front-desk operations on Sept. 1. The existing Southeast station at 3675 E. Harmon Ave. is now closed while renovations are completed. LVMPD has said the closure will not affect emergency police response, according to the department’s current Southeast Area Command station information.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill joined public officials, law-enforcement personnel and community members for Thursday’s opening. Photographs from the event show Southeast Area Command Capt. Justin Byers, Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, Assemblywoman Venicia Considine, Las Vegas Councilwoman Olivia Diaz, Assemblyman Max Carter and Builders United project executive Jon Covey among those participating in the ribbon cutting, according to Las Vegas Sun coverage of the opening.

A temporary home for Southeast Area Command

For residents who normally use the Southeast Area Command, the most immediate change is the location of walk-in police services. The Hollywood building is temporarily functioning as the Southeast command’s base while the Harmon Avenue facility is renovated.

LVMPD said Thursday that the renovation is expected to take approximately nine months. The department had previously announced that front-desk services would shift to Hollywood beginning Sept. 1 and that the Harmon Avenue building would be completely closed during the project.

The Southeast Area Command currently serves a large portion of the eastern and southeastern Las Vegas Valley. LVMPD describes its jurisdiction as extending from Charleston Boulevard south toward Henderson, with Pecos Road generally forming the western boundary and the Wetlands Park area forming the eastern boundary.

Earlier this year, Metro officials said the arrangement is temporary: once the Southeast station renovation is finished, Southeast personnel are expected to return to their original facility and the Hollywood location will operate as its own permanent area command. Previous reporting has said the new Hollywood command will focus on the Charleston Boulevard corridor and surrounding East Las Vegas neighborhoods. FOX5 reported in May that Charleston currently serves as a dividing line between the Northeast and Southeast commands and that the new command is intended to bring a dedicated police presence closer to neighborhoods on both sides of that corridor.

A police station East Las Vegas officials say was decades in the making

The Hollywood Area Command has been discussed by local officials as a long-awaited public-safety investment for the east side. The project broke ground in March 2025, and McMahill said during a construction update this year that law enforcement leaders had wanted a dedicated East Las Vegas station for decades.

The location places officers near several major community facilities and heavily traveled east-valley corridors. The site is near Sahara Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard and is part of an area that includes recreation facilities, schools and residential neighborhoods.

At Thursday’s opening, Metro emphasized both police visibility and response capability. The department said the permanent command is intended to put officers closer to the neighborhoods they serve and provide a stronger law-enforcement presence in East Las Vegas. FOX5 reported from the opening that Metro also sees the location as strategically useful for addressing traffic complaints, parks and recreation areas, and public-safety concerns in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Clark County capital funding and the size of the new facility

LVMPD credited Clark County’s Capital Improvement Program with making the Hollywood Area Command possible. Clark County’s Fiscal Year 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Program lists $12,233,933 for the Hollywood Area Command under LVMPD capital improvements.

Earlier public capital-planning materials described the project as a roughly 22,764-square-foot police substation. Builders United, the general contractor, now describes the completed Hollywood facility as a 23,879-square-foot public-safety building on approximately six acres. The contractor says the site includes secure access, dedicated parking, emergency-vehicle circulation, perimeter security and water-efficient landscaping, with interior space for administrative offices, briefing and training rooms, evidence processing, secure holding and operational support. Additional building systems include communications, access-control and emergency backup infrastructure, according to Builders United’s project description.

Budget context: The $12.23 million figure is the amount listed for the Hollywood Area Command in Clark County’s published capital-improvement plan. LVMPD’s opening announcement did not state a final all-in construction cost, so Las Vegas News is not presenting the capital-plan figure as a final audited project total.

The Southeast renovation is a separate project. LVMPD’s FY 2026-2027 tentative budget listed a $9 million Southeast Area Command remodel among supplemental capital requests. That same budget document states that funding for the supplemental requests was not included in the tentative budget, making the figure a planning request rather than evidence of a final approved renovation cost.

Opening follows the line-of-duty death of Officer Austin Zade Abdelnabi

Thursday’s ceremony carried a heavier significance for Southeast Area Command personnel because the move comes only a month after the death of Officer Austin Zade Abdelnabi.

Abdelnabi was killed in the line of duty on Aug. 4 while responding to a report of an armed man near East Tropicana Avenue. According to LVMPD’s official critical-incident briefing, Abdelnabi was the first officer to arrive after a police drone located the armed subject near Mountain Vista Street and the Interstate 11 overpass. He was struck by gunfire shortly after arriving and later died at University Medical Center.

The department’s memorial biography for Abdelnabi says he joined LVMPD in November 2023 after earning a criminal justice degree from Clemson University. He had served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including two overseas deployments, and was assigned to Southeast Area Command’s Community Safety Division.

LVMPD said Abdelnabi would have been among the officers moving into the Hollywood facility this week. As work begins at the Southeast station, the department said his locker will be preserved in his honor.

Charleston Hartfield memorial will remain in place

Metro also said the memorial for Officer Charleston Hartfield at Southeast Area Command will remain in place during the renovation.

Hartfield, an LVMPD officer and decorated Army veteran, was killed on Oct. 1, 2017, while off duty at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. According to LVMPD’s official memorial page, Hartfield took action to help others after gunfire began. He was 34.

His connection to the Southeast Area Command is especially significant: LVMPD says Hartfield helped develop a memorial wall at that station honoring fallen officers. Keeping his memorial in place while the building is modernized preserves a piece of the command’s history even as its physical infrastructure changes.

What East Las Vegas residents should know now

Temporary Southeast Area Command location:
2300 S. Hollywood Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89142

Former Southeast location during renovation:
3675 E. Harmon Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89121 — closed until renovation work is complete.

Police response:
LVMPD says emergency response will not be affected by the temporary station closure.

Long-term plan:
Southeast Area Command is expected to return to the Harmon Avenue station after renovations, while the Hollywood facility transitions into a permanent, separately operating East Las Vegas area command.

What happens next

The next major milestone will be completion of the Southeast Area Command renovation and the subsequent separation of the two commands. At that point, Metro is expected to return Southeast personnel to Harmon Avenue and establish Hollywood as a permanent neighborhood command serving East Las Vegas.

That transition will be important beyond the opening of a new building. It will determine the final deployment pattern, service boundaries and day-to-day police presence for communities around the Charleston corridor, Sunrise Manor and surrounding east-valley neighborhoods.

For now, Hollywood Area Command is serving two purposes at once: it is the temporary operational home for Southeast officers and a first look at a permanent expansion of Metro’s neighborhood policing footprint in East Las Vegas.

Developing coverage: Las Vegas News will update this report if LVMPD or Clark County releases a final renovation schedule, permanent Hollywood Area Command boundaries or an updated final project cost.
