LAS VEGAS —The Las Vegas First Friday shooting left one person dead and two others injured after gunfire erupted in the Arts District late Friday, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Officers were in the area of South Main Street and West Charleston Boulevard at approximately 10:17 p.m. Oct. 2 when they heard shots being fired, LVMPD said.
Police ran into the crowd and located two people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Additional officers arriving at the scene found a third shooting victim.
Medical personnel transported all three to a nearby hospital. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to LVMPD.
Subsequent local reporting, citing police, identified all three people shot as teenagers. Authorities had not publicly identified the person who died in the information available Saturday.
Police say fight preceded First Friday shooting
LVMPD’s Homicide Section responded and took over the investigation.
Detectives determined that a physical altercation involving several people occurred before the shooting, according to the department’s preliminary investigation.
Police said an unknown male produced a firearm during the confrontation and began shooting, striking multiple people. The suspected shooter fled before officers could apprehend him.
LVMPD has not publicly disclosed what started the altercation, the relationship between the people involved or a motive for the shooting.
Gunfire erupted during final minutes of First Friday
The shooting occurred as thousands of visitors had been gathering in the Arts District for First Friday, the long-running monthly arts and culture event.
Organizers had advertised the Oct. 2 event from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. as a celebration of First Friday’s 24th year, featuring local artists, live painting, food and other activities.
First Friday organizers subsequently confirmed that the shooting occurred during the final minutes of the event.
The organization said after the shooting that it was working to identify what it described as the most thorough and appropriate response before future events take place.
Traffic-camera footage reported by KTNV showed numerous police and emergency vehicles around Charleston Boulevard and Main Street following the shooting, with sections of the area cordoned off as investigators processed the scene.
LVMPD had increased First Friday enforcement
The fatal shooting occurred against a backdrop of heightened police attention to public-safety problems surrounding First Friday.
Less than an hour before the shooting, FOX5 published an interview with LVMPD Downtown Area Command Capt. Ryan Wiggins describing increased enforcement aimed primarily at unsupervised juveniles, fights, curfew violations and weapons during First Friday gatherings.
LVMPD told the station that officers typically recover at least one illegally concealed firearm during each First Friday event.
Police also said 78 juveniles were arrested or cited during the May First Friday event. After additional officers were deployed, that number dropped to 18 in August, according to the department’s figures reported by FOX5.
Wiggins said the additional police presence had coincided with a decline in crime at First Friday in recent months.
First Friday marked 24 years in Las Vegas
The shooting happened on a significant night for the event.
The First Friday Foundation had promoted the Oct. 2 gathering as a celebration of 24 years of First Friday in Las Vegas.
First Friday began in 2002 and developed into one of the Arts District’s best-known recurring events, providing space for local artists, musicians, makers and small businesses.
The First Friday Foundation describes itself as a nonprofit organization supporting local arts, culture and education, with its monthly Arts District festival serving as its most visible community event.
