Las Vegas Police Officer Dies After East Tropicana Shooting; Armed Suspect Also Killed

A 30-year-old Las Vegas police officer died after exchanging gunfire with an armed person outside a business on East Tropicana Avenue, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said.

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer and an armed person were killed Tuesday afternoon during an exchange of gunfire outside an east valley business, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said.

Police received a call shortly before 4 p.m. reporting a person with a firearm at a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue. The location is near Mountain Vista Street in the southeast Las Vegas Valley.

The caller told dispatchers that the person was waving a firearm and appeared to be intoxicated, according to LVMPD’s preliminary account.

Patrol officers and police drones were sent to the area. Officers encountered the armed person, and an exchange of gunfire followed, McMahill said.

The armed person was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded officer received emergency medical treatment before being transported to University Medical Center, where medical personnel continued attempting to save him.

The officer died from his injuries, McMahill announced during an evening media briefing.

Officer was 30 years old

McMahill described the officer as a 30-year-old who had served with LVMPD since 2023. The officer’s name was not immediately released during the briefing as authorities worked to complete official notifications.

Local reporting described the officer as a Marine veteran. Las Vegas News is withholding his name until it is formally released by LVMPD or the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner.

McMahill asked the Las Vegas community to keep the officer’s relatives, friends and fellow officers in their thoughts as the department faced the loss.

The sheriff also thanked the officers, firefighters, paramedics and hospital personnel who responded and attempted to save the officer.

Initial call reported person waving a firearm

The confrontation began after someone called police about an armed person at a business, according to the department’s preliminary account.

The caller reported that the person was waving the firearm and appeared intoxicated. LVMPD dispatched patrol officers and drone resources before officers made direct contact with the person.

Police had not disclosed the type of firearm recovered, how many rounds were fired or how many officers discharged their weapons as of Tuesday night.

Authorities also had not publicly identified the armed person or explained what occurred at the business before the emergency call.

The fatal shooting prompted a large emergency response and traffic restrictions around East Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street while investigators processed the scene.

LVMPD is expected to release additional details after investigators review body-camera video, drone recordings, witness statements, dispatch communications and evidence collected from the location.

The department typically releases a more detailed critical-incident briefing after an officer-involved shooting. That presentation may identify the officers who fired, provide a chronology of the encounter and include selected video or audio recordings.

The Clark County coroner’s office will be responsible for formally identifying the people who died and determining their causes and manners of death.
