LVMPD Mourns Officer Austin Abdelnabi After Fatal East Las Vegas Ambush

The 30-year-old police officer and decorated Marine Corps veteran was remembered for a life devoted to service as processions and tributes unfolded across the Las Vegas Valley.

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is mourning Officer Austin Abdelnabi, a 30-year-old Marine Corps veteran who authorities said was ambushed and fatally shot while responding to a report of an armed man in the east Las Vegas Valley.

In a public tribute posted Wednesday, LVMPD said the previous 24 hours had been “incredibly difficult” as the department began honoring Abdelnabi’s life and service.

The agency thanked community members, law enforcement organizations and people across the country for an outpouring of condolences, prayers and support.

Metro asked the public to keep Abdelnabi’s wife, loved ones, friends and fellow officers in their thoughts as the department prepares to honor his service and sacrifice.

Officer was responding to reports of an armed man

Police received the initial 911 call at approximately 3:57 p.m. Tuesday from a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue.

The caller reported that a man was waving a firearm and appeared to be intoxicated. Additional reports described a person walking erratically with a gun near Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street.

Officers and LVMPD drones were sent to the area. Police eventually located the armed man farther south, in the 5400 block of South Mountain Vista Street near Hacienda Avenue and Interstate 11.

McMahill said Abdelnabi was among the first officers to arrive and was ambushed as he exited his patrol vehicle. The gunman immediately opened fire, striking Abdelnabi, according to the sheriff.

At least one officer returned fire. The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers and first responders tried to save him

Officers rushed to Abdelnabi after the shooting and immediately began lifesaving efforts. A Clark County Office of Public Safety sergeant helped perform CPR, while Clark County firefighters and emergency medical personnel treated the wounded officer.

Police shut down roads to create an emergency route to University Medical Center, where medical personnel continued efforts to save him.

Abdelnabi was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

McMahill praised the officers, firefighters, emergency responders, doctors and nurses who attempted to save Abdelnabi’s life.

The sheriff said the loss had left Abdelnabi’s family, his department and the broader Las Vegas community grieving.

A Marine veteran who continued serving

Abdelnabi was originally from the Greenville area of South Carolina and graduated from Blue Ridge High School in Greer.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from 2014 to 2018. During his military service, he was assigned to Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division and received multiple decorations.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Abdelnabi attended Clemson University. Clemson’s May 2022 commencement program lists Austin Zade Abdelnabi of Greer, South Carolina, among the university’s criminal justice graduates.

Abdelnabi joined LVMPD in November 2023 and was assigned to the Southeast Area Command, which serves neighborhoods in the eastern and southeastern portions of the Las Vegas Valley.

McMahill described Abdelnabi as someone who loved being a police officer and spoke often about his love for his wife, Sage.

He is also survived by his parents and siblings.

Processions honor fallen Las Vegas officer

Hundreds of officers, firefighters, medical personnel and other first responders gathered outside UMC Tuesday evening.

Uniformed personnel formed an honor line as Abdelnabi’s flag-draped body was escorted from the hospital. Police motorcycles and marked patrol vehicles then accompanied the procession to the Clark County coroner’s office.

A second procession was held Wednesday as Abdelnabi was transported from the coroner’s office to a Las Vegas funeral home.

Images released by LVMPD showed honor guard members carrying Abdelnabi’s flag-covered casket as officers stood at attention and saluted. Additional photographs showed law enforcement personnel lining the entrance to UMC.

Community and public officials respond

Condolences came from police and fire agencies across Nevada and throughout the country.

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, who served as Clark County sheriff before becoming governor, said Nevada had lost one of its own and pledged that Abdelnabi’s sacrifice would not be forgotten.

Clark County officials ordered flags at county buildings lowered in Abdelnabi’s honor.

The Las Vegas Aviators also displayed Abdelnabi’s name at Las Vegas Ballpark and observed a moment of silence during Tuesday night’s game.

The Injured Police Officers Fund announced a public candlelight vigil honoring Abdelnabi for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Police Memorial Park near West Cheyenne Avenue and North Grand Canyon Drive.

Investigation continues

The shooting was the ninth officer-involved shooting investigated within LVMPD’s jurisdiction in 2026, according to police.

The department is expected to identify the gunman and release additional information about the encounter, including available body-worn camera video, after investigators complete the initial evidence review and required notifications.

Funeral and memorial service information for Abdelnabi will be released after arrangements are finalized with his family.

LVMPD concluded its tribute by thanking the public for standing with the department during what it described as a heartbreaking time.
