Commissioners William McCurdy II, Michael Naft and their colleagues celebrated Boyd Gaming’s golden anniversary during a ceremonial presentation, welcoming Marianne Boyd Johnson, Chairman of the Board; her son Sean Boyd; and Erin McMullen Midby, Vice President of Government Affairs. The moment highlighted a half-century of growth for a company that began as a modest family venture and evolved into a major national gaming operator.

Historic Roots in Downtown Las Vegas

Founded in 1975 by father-and-son team Sam Boyd and Bill Boyd, the company began with operations in downtown Las Vegas—a time when the local gaming landscape looked dramatically different. Over the years, Boyd Gaming expanded steadily across the Valley and beyond, becoming known for its strong focus on serving local residents.

Today, Boyd Gaming operates 28 properties in 11 states, including 10 casinos in Southern Nevada, cementing its reputation as one of the region’s premier local gaming operators.

Education has also remained a key focus. The William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV, named in honor of co-founder Bill Boyd, stands as one of the company’s flagship contributions to higher education in the state.

A Legacy That Helped Shape Modern Las Vegas

In recognizing the company’s golden anniversary, commissioners emphasized Boyd Gaming’s role not only as a gaming operator but also as a community builder, employer and philanthropic partner.

As the corporation enters its next 50 years, community leaders say Boyd remains an example of the long-standing businesses that helped define modern Las Vegas and continue to support its evolving future.
