Martha J. Osborne – Santa Barbara native, devoted educator, passionate horsewoman, and a woman who never met a stranger, passed away on October 4, 2026, at the age of 89.

Born on May 3, 1937, in Santa Barbara, Martha spent her life embracing the beauty and charm of California’s Central Coast. Throughout her 89 years, she proudly called Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Los Olivos home. Known for her warm personality and remarkable ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, from anywhere, Martha had a special gift for making people feel welcome and connected.

After graduating from Santa Barbara High School, Martha earned her B.A. in Education and Humanities from UC Santa Barbara and an M.A. in Counseling and Guidance from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo — credentials that suggested she’d been giving people advice professionally since roughly forever.

Her teaching career kicked off in 1959 at Woodrow Wilson Junior High in San Diego, where she taught English to seventh through ninth graders — a feat requiring patience and stamina. She soon returned to her hometown to teach English and social sciences in the Santa Barbara City Schools before heading north to Santa Maria and Allan Hancock College, where she truly settled in.

At Hancock, Martha taught English and speech, then decided that helping students one appointment at a time was her passion and moved into the counseling center. From there, she kept collecting titles: Acting Director of Admissions and Records, Director of the Lompoc and Santa Ynez Educational Centers, and finally Associate Dean of Counseling and Student Development. In every role, her mission was the same: make people’s lives better. Generations of students were glad she did.

Martha rarely met a cause she wouldn’t join. She served on the boards of Arts Outreach and the Santa Ynez Historical Society and reigned as past president of the Santa Barbara County Quarter Horse Association. She was a devoted member of the Let’s Volunteer Club.

An avid gardener, her happy place was the Mission Rose Garden, where she lovingly tended the Julia Child roses. She considered herself lucky to spend her days among that beauty, striking up conversations with visitors from every corner of the globe. No tourist was safe; all left knowing Martha.

At home, she cooked, hosted, and fed anyone who wandered in — family, friends, and probably a few strangers from the garden. She loved horses, digging in the dirt, and great books. Those who knew her would describe her as kind, generous, and with a wonderful sense of humor.

Martha is survived by her sister, Roseanne; her children, Elizabeth, Jonathan (Nina), and Jennifer (Daniel); grandchildren Cole (Blaire) and Lizzy (Tim) and four great-grandchildren.

Please join us to lift a glass to Martha on Friday, November 6, 2026, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at the Mission Rose Garden — her favorite spot in the world, surrounded by her beloved roses and, presumably, a few visitors she hasn’t yet met. She would be absolutely thrilled.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center (www.heartsriding.org, 805-964-1519), combining two of her great loves: horses and taking care of people.
