Clark County school police say it won't pursue contract with Flock

The police chief for the state's largest school district said his department has decided it will not pursue a contract to access the controversial license plate readers that are part of Flock Safety's systems following a thorough review, he announced in a Monday statement.

The statement comes after The Nevada Independent reported in August that the school district had an agreement with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Foundation to access "all shared cameras within Clark County and the Las Vegas area" in the Flock network. Community members raised concerns about student privacy and safety.

After the news of the agreement came out, the district announced it would pause its use of Flock systems while Clark County School District Police Chief Jeff Clark looked into the matter.

In his Monday statement, Clark said the district's police department does not own or operate Flock hardware, though it has previously accessed data through partner law enforcement agencies.

"Any future updates regarding this technology will be shared with the Board of School Trustees and the public," Clark said in the statement. "In any emergency involving imminent danger to our students, staff, or community, we will collaborate with our law enforcement partners and use all available tools to ensure their safety."

When asked if the district would continue using the technology through Metro's foundation, the district declined to comment further.
