Oct. 13: Federal Courthouse Shooter Identified; Jerri Green Will Debate Independent Gubernatorial Candidates

COURTHOUSE SHOOTING UPDATE: Law enforcement officials on Monday identified the armed man who was shot and killed by a security officer at Nashville’s federal courthouse last week as 41-year-old Jack Gregory Henson. In partial security camera footage released jointly by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office, Henson can be seen approaching the court’s security checkpoint and brandishing a pistol and a knife while gesturing at several security officers. The footage shows him stepping toward a security officer with the knife in his hand before the officer shoots him. Officials said that “lifesaving efforts were then made by members of the U.S. Marshals Service until emergency personnel could arrive.” Henson was pronounced dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The shooting is under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. — Steven Hale

DEBATE UPDATE: Democratic candidate for governor Jerri Green will participate in a debate with independents Lauren Pinkston and David Hatley later this month, despite initially declining to debate without Republican Marsha Blackburn. With Blackburn refusing to debate in the primary and general, Green had originally declined to debate the two independents, noting they were both polling well below the 15 percent threshold used in presidential debates. Now the three will debate Oct. 27 at MTSU, and the Tennessee Press Association will stream the event for the public. — Sarah Grace Taylor
