Nov. 6: A Confirmed Measles Case in Nashville; CoreCivic Making Bank From Deportations

MEASLES ALERT: The Metro Public Health Department has confirmed a case of measles in Nashville. There is currently no public threat, but the unvaccinated person was in public places between last Friday and this Tuesday. Those who were at New Approach Jewelry Store in Arrington (Oct. 30 and Nov. 2), a Halloween party at the downtown Westin Hotel (Oct. 31), Remedy Lash and Co. in Brentwood (Nov. 1), Subway on Franklin Rd. in Brentwood (Nov. 1), Sprouts on Nolensville Rd. in Nashville (Nov. 1), Joint Chiropractic in Brentwood (Nov. 2) and CareNow Urgent Care in Antioch (Nov. 3) should be alert for possible symptoms, including rash, fever, cough and red, watery eyes. This is the second confirmed case of measles in Nashville this year. — David Boclair

CORECIVIC EARNINGS: The Trump administration’s ongoing pursuit of mass deportations continues to be a boon for Tennessee-based private prison giant CoreCivic. Lucibeth Mayberry, the company’s president and CEO, said on an investor call Thursday morning that “higher enforcement activity and increases in nationwide ICE detention populations contributed” to a better-than-expected third quarter. Mayberry said that detainees from ICE in CoreCivic facilities increased by 80.1 percent from the beginning of 2025 through September 30th, 2026, bringing the company’s total detainee population to 18,283. Contracts with the federal government, primarily ICE and the U.S. Marshals Service, made up more than half of CoreCivic’s revenue during the third quarter. — Steven Hale

DRIVERLESS GROWTH: Lyft plans to expand its Waymo robotaxi fleet in Nashville by the end of this year, Reuters reported. The expansion will include Waymo service to Nashville International Airport. An arrangement between the entities allows riders to book a Waymo autonomous vehicle through the Lyft app, and Lyft charges a fee to maintain, clean and charge the Waymo vehicles. Lyft has been servicing Waymo vehicles since June and last month opened an 80,000-square-foot depot in Middle Tennessee. “Early indications are we’re doing a good job, as evidenced by expanding the service area, growing the fleet, opening up airport rides, and then we’ll take it from there,” CFO Michael Brous told Reuters. — David Boclair

MARSHA’S TRANSITION: After appointing Lt. Gov. Stuart McWhorter to lead her transition into the governor’s office on Wednesday, Marsha Blackburn announced Thursday a full team of Republican allies to make up her transition committee.
