CONCORD – The New Hampshire Secretary of State’s Office confirmed it was sent a suspicious letter containing a white substance this week, which was intercepted by the post office as federal authorities continue to investigate similar situations occurring nationwide.
The Secretary of State’s Office is in the State House in Concord.
Investigations are being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and U.S. Capitol Police as similar letters were sent to congressional and election officials around the country, according to AP news.com. It noted others who were sent letters with a strange white substance included Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester, a Democrat from Delaware, and Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand from New York.
“Our office has been contacted by the FBI, and we have been made aware that certain offices in New Hampshire have received suspicious letters, and we have received communication from the FBI about their efforts to respond. We thank our Federal partners for their continued efforts to keep New Hampshire safe. We refer all other questions to the FBI for a response,” said Michael Garrity, spokesman for the New Hampshire Office of the Attorney General.
A spokesperson for Secretary of State David M. Scanlan said: “Our office was sent a suspicious letter that was intercepted by the post office. We have been in close contact with law enforcement and relevant agencies, who are taking the appropriate steps to address this.”
The AP news article also noted the FBI said the bureau and the Postal Inspection Service were “investigating a series of suspicious mailings sent to various addresses nationwide, including Secretary of State offices and their related election offices,” adding that mailed packages containing a powdery substance caused evacuations of election offices in Louisiana and Oklahoma this week.
