What’s On Your Mind at Portsmouth Ward 4? by Katharine Webster, InDepthNH.org
Richard Parian, who voted at Portsmouth Ward 4 at Portsmouth High School, said what was on the top of his mind would be keeping the Democrats out of power. “I believe they are truly an evil cult that supports corruption.” He said he is registered unaffiliated but was voting a straight Republican ticket.
Marlee McGurl said before voting what was on top of her mind was “affordable housing especially for us younger people.” She said she is a registered Democrat who doesn’t have kids, but hopes to in the future and owns her own home. “I have to keep the public schools in mind, too,” adding she still hadn’t made up her mind on Question 2.
Ronnie Flaschner said she was a Democratic Observer at Portsmouth Ward 4. About the turnout: “People are really fired up…the flood at 8 o’clock was incredible.” She said there were tons of new registrations with people of all ages. “I did sense a lot of tension between people waiting in line” before the polls opened.

FIRST IN LINE at Ward 10 in Concord is Dean Whitefield ARNIE ALPERT photo
CONCORD – Dean Whitefield was first in line to vote at Broken Ground School, the polling place for Concord’s Ward 10. A couple dozen others lined up behind him in the hallway and just outside the door. But they had to wait for Jae Whitelaw, the moderator to swear in the election officials, who just before 7:00 am raised their right hands and swore an oath to uphold the Constitution. When that was done, the poll workers were ready to welcome the voters, including those who were not yet registered.
“Get your IDs out,” Diana Wiener told the voters as they strode in. Wiener and Deb Miller were especially alert for new voters. “We got three right away,” Miller said, with a big smile. Dennis Holt was waiting for them at the same-day registration table. One
new voter, naturalization certificate and new U.S. passport in hand, was ready to prove his identity and citizenship.
The early arrivals were all inside by 7:03. Outside, Brett Johnson, from Tennessee, was staffing a table for Turning Point Action with flyers for Republican candidates. One woman held a sign for a school board candidate, the only seriously contested local
election in the ward. Election Day had begun.
