Communities across the Borderland are preparing to honor military veterans with parades, ceremonies and celebrations in the days leading up to Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
The observances come as El Paso County recognized retired Army Staff Sgt. Sheila Y. Anthony as its Veteran of the Year. Anthony was honored Monday during an El Paso County Commissioners Court meeting for her military service and continued advocacy on behalf of veterans and their families.
Anthony served 22 years in the military, including two deployments to Afghanistan, before retiring in 2017. A recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Action Badge, she now serves as a veterans and military liaison for the city of El Paso, helping connect veterans with housing, supportive services and other resources. Her work also includes outreach to women veterans and suicide prevention awareness.
El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego praised Anthony’s commitment to ensuring that “no veteran is ever forgotten.” That spirit of recognition will extend throughout the region in the coming days, with events offering residents opportunities to celebrate and thank those who have served.
