11-Year-Old Girl Struck and Killed While Crossing Lake Mead Boulevard in East Las Vegas

11-Year-Old Girl Killed in Lake Mead Boulevard Crash

LAS VEGAS — An 11-year-old girl was struck and killed Monday evening in East Las Vegas after stepping into the path of an oncoming vehicle in a construction zone, marking the 141st traffic-related fatality of 2025 in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction, authorities said.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5:18 p.m. on Nov. 17 on Lake Mead Boulevard west of Concord Street, an active construction area where westbound traffic was funneled into a single travel lane. Sunset had already passed, and investigators noted that lighting, lane restrictions and pedestrian movement were all factors under review.

According to an LVMPD Traffic Bureau report, a 2009 Nissan Sentra driven by 29-year-old Laniya Jones of Las Vegas was heading westbound through the construction zone when the juvenile began crossing Lake Mead Boulevard, moving northbound outside a designated crosswalk.

Police said the child entered the roadway directly into the Nissan’s travel lane. Jones, the driver, immediately applied the brakes and swerved in an attempt to avoid a collision, but investigators determined the impact was unavoidable.

Emergency medical personnel arrived within minutes and evaluated the child, but determined she was beyond resuscitation. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and did not require transport to a hospital.

Jones remained at the location and cooperated with officers. LVMPD said she showed no signs of impairment, and no immediate indicators of reckless or aggressive driving were observed at the scene.

Traffic investigators spent several hours collecting measurements, documenting the construction configuration, examining visibility conditions and interviewing witnesses. The section of Lake Mead Boulevard where the collision occurred is frequently congested and has undergone phased construction projects throughout the year. Authorities noted that pedestrian behavior and roadway design will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

The identity of the victim, an 11-year-old Las Vegas girl, will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office once next of kin notifications are complete.

Her death pushes the metro area’s roadway fatality count to 141 for the year, continuing a trend of pedestrian-involved crashes that has concerned safety officials in Clark County. Metro’s Traffic Bureau has repeatedly urged residents to use marked crosswalks and obey temporary construction signage, especially during evening hours when visibility is limited.

The Collision Investigation Section is handling the case and is expected to release additional findings once the analysis of roadway conditions and speed calculations is complete.
