LAS VEGAS (Las Vegas News) — A woman was shot and killed inside her southwest Las Vegas apartment Tuesday afternoon after calling police to report that her ex-boyfriend was threatening her with a firearm, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

The shooting was reported at approximately 3:28 p.m. on March 17, 2026, in the 8900 block of South Durango Drive, a residential area in the southwest valley that includes apartment complexes and nearby commercial corridors.

According to police, LVMPD Communications received a 911 call from a woman who said her ex-boyfriend had arrived at the apartment to pick up personal property. During the call, the woman could be heard telling dispatchers that the man was threatening her with a firearm.

The call disconnected shortly afterward.

Officers were immediately dispatched to the apartment. When they arrived, police made entry into the residence and located an unresponsive woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, authorities said. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead inside the apartment.

Police said the suspect had already fled before officers arrived.

The case was turned over to the LVMPD Homicide Section, which responded to the scene and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Detectives processed the apartment for evidence, canvassed the surrounding area, and worked to determine the sequence of events leading up to the killing.

Investigators also began efforts to identify and locate the suspect based on information gathered from the initial 911 call and evidence at the scene.

Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as 33-year-old Jorge Garcia, according to LVMPD.

Police later located Garcia and took him into custody without incident. Authorities did not specify where or when he was apprehended but confirmed that the arrest was made following investigative efforts by homicide detectives.

Garcia was transported to the Clark County Detention Center, where he was booked on a charge of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon.

Under Nevada law, an open murder charge allows prosecutors to pursue varying degrees of homicide charges, including first-degree or second-degree murder, depending on the findings of the investigation and any subsequent court proceedings.

Investigators have not released additional details about what led up to the confrontation inside the apartment or how long the suspect had been at the residence prior to the shooting. Police have also not disclosed whether there were any prior calls for service associated with the location.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect and victim were previously in a relationship but did not provide further details regarding the nature or duration of that relationship.

The identity of the victim has not yet been publicly released. Officials said the Clark County Coroner’s Office will determine and release the victim’s identity, along with the official cause and manner of death, after next-of-kin notification procedures are completed.

The shooting remains under active investigation.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about the incident, including anyone who may have been in the area at the time or who may have knowledge of the events leading up to the shooting, to come forward.

LVMPD officials emphasized that tips from the public can play a critical role in helping investigators establish timelines, corroborate evidence, and support prosecution efforts in homicide cases.

The department has not announced any additional suspects in connection with the case.

This marks another homicide investigation in the Las Vegas valley as police continue to respond to violent crime incidents across the region. Authorities have not indicated whether this case is believed to be isolated or connected to any broader pattern.
