LAS VEGAS — The city of Las Vegas has opened applications for new public safety officers, launching a regional recruitment drive aimed at filling current vacancies and preparing for anticipated retirements next year. Applications for lateral and entry-level deputy city marshal and corrections officer positions are being accepted now through Dec. 18, 2025, with additional opportunities available for experienced Municipal Court marshals.
Qualified candidates can apply directly through the city’s Department of Public Safety recruitment portal at LasVegasNevada.gov/DPS.
City officials say the hiring effort is driven by the need to bolster staffing ahead of projected departures in 2026. Accepted entry-level recruits — who must be at least 21 years old — will begin academy training in August 2026. The city estimates it takes 10 to 12 months to fully train new recruits, who receive paid training throughout the academy before moving into active duty assignments.
Physical Readiness Tests Set for November and January

Prospective candidates will be required to complete physical readiness evaluations scheduled for Nov. 20, 2025, and Jan. 8, 2026. The tests are part of the city’s multi-step process to identify applicants prepared for the physical and mental demands of law enforcement work.
To help candidates prepare, the city is offering Saturday morning workout and networking sessions where aspiring officers can meet current marshals, ask questions, and build confidence in their physical abilities.
A ride-along program is also available. Applicants can spend a full shift with a working marshal to gain first-hand insight into the responsibilities of the role. Those interested in ride-alongs or workout sessions can email [email protected].
What Deputy City Marshals Do
Deputy city marshals are fully sworn police officers tasked with protecting people and property within city limits. Their responsibilities range from patrolling high-traffic corridors and business districts to enforcing traffic laws, making arrests, serving warrants, and attending community engagement events.
Marshals also enforce state statutes and city ordinances on property owned, leased, or controlled by the city of Las Vegas — a broad jurisdiction covering parks, government buildings, and public spaces.
Recruitment Extends Across the Region
The city says it is actively recruiting candidates from across Southern Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah, and is encouraging applications from experienced police officers and recently retired law enforcement personnel seeking new opportunities.
Public Safety Chief Jason Potts said the department expects significant staffing needs next year.
“Due to upcoming retirements and attrition, we are looking to fill up to 25 openings for deputy city marshals next year,” Potts said. “Our officers focus on proactive, data-driven policing and building community relationships that enhance public safety and make life better.”
The city’s Department of Public Safety oversees deputy city marshals and corrections officers, both of which play integral roles in community protection, emergency response, court security, and detention operations.
