LAS VEGAS — Southern Nevada saw a high-impact week across public safety, courts, transportation and city affairs, as police investigations, federal settlements, major traffic disruptions and community events drew widespread attention. Here’s a comprehensive look at the biggest stories influencing Las Vegas residents and visitors.

Public Safety: LVMPD Responds to Violent Crimes and Multiple Fatal Crashes

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department handled several major incidents this week, including the fifth officer-involved shooting of 2025. Officers were called to a carjacking in progress near Indian River Drive on Nov. 23, where a knife-wielding suspect reportedly threatened a man. LVMPD says the confrontation escalated, leading to an officer opening fire. The suspect was taken to a hospital, and the investigation remains ongoing under the department’s Force Investigation Team.

Detectives are also searching for a gunman who robbed a Summerlin-area casino on Nov. 13, releasing surveillance video and urging the public to provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

On the roads, LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section continues to process the aftermath of several deadly crashes, including a 12-vehicle chain-reaction collision on Cheyenne Avenue and a separate double-fatal crash on Blue Diamond Road. Both incidents contribute to what officials describe as one of the deadliest traffic years in recent memory.

Courts: Major Federal Fraud Settlement and Cross-State Indictment Announced

Vohra Wound Physicians Fraud Settlement

In a significant federal enforcement action, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Vohra Wound Physicians and its owner, Dr. Ameet Vohra, agreed to pay $45 million to resolve allegations involving medically unnecessary surgical procedures billed to Medicare. Prosecutors said the settlement is among the nation’s largest involving wound-care fraud and alleged upcoding practices.

Separately, a federal grand jury in Pennsylvania indicted a former Las Vegas resident on charges of cyberstalking and sexual exploitation of a minor. Prosecutors say the conduct spanned multiple years and involved intimidation, harassment and unlawful coercion. The defendant’s arraignment is expected next month.

Transportation: F1 Gridlock, Bus Detours and Major Road Closures Impact Residents

As the Formula 1 Heineken Las Vegas Grand Prix concluded its racing schedule, the Strip corridor and surrounding neighborhoods experienced heavy congestion, extended detours and limited access.

RTC bus routes—including the Deuce, CX, 119, 202 and 203—saw widespread rerouting due to continued fence removal and track disassembly. Several stops remained temporarily suspended, including the heavily trafficked Bellagio stop.

City officials warned that full 24-hour closures on key sections of Koval Lane and Harmon Avenue would extend into Thanksgiving weekend before crews complete restoration work.

City of Las Vegas Grants Announcement — CDBG & HOPWA

The City of Las Vegas announced the launch of its 2025–2027 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOPWA funding cycles. Nonprofits serving low-income residents, people living with HIV/AIDS, and individuals at risk of homelessness are encouraged to apply.

City officials say the grants aim to support:

  • Homelessness prevention
  • Housing stability
  • Health and wellness services
  • Neighborhood revitalization
  • Educational enrichment programs

The competitive process requires applicants to detail staffing, financial capacity and program effectiveness.

Business: Resorts World Hit with Historic $10.5M Penalty

Vegas Casino Hit With Historic $10.5M Fine in Gambling Scandal

Nevada gaming regulators levied a $10.5 million fine against Resorts World Las Vegas, one of the largest penalties in state history. The casino was accused of allowing individuals with illegal bookmaking ties and felony convictions to gamble undetected.

Caesars Entertainment also faced scrutiny for a separate lapse involving an illegal bookmaker. Executives issued a public apology and pledged to tighten compliance procedures.

Meanwhile, Strip resorts reported strong Thanksgiving-week bookings, early holiday spending and increased pedestrian traffic across major tourist corridors.

Community & Culture: Holiday Events and Youth Homelessness Awareness Highlight the Week

Clark County officials joined nonprofit leaders to recognize National Homeless Youth Awareness Month, illuminating the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign in purple and gold. Advocates say thousands of minors experience homelessness statewide each year, often hidden in unstable or unsafe living arrangements.

In Ward 5, residents kicked off the holiday season at the annual Holiday Lighting Event, where Councilwoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong joined Cox Communications to light festive displays along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The celebration included hot chocolate, holiday music and a performance by the Western High School Choir.

Día de los Muertos displays, local art markets and seasonal attractions also drew thousands across the valley as the city transitions into its winter tourism peak.

Sports: Raiders Struggle, Golden Knights Prep for Key Matchups

The Raiders continued their late-season challenges after falling 33–16 to the Cowboys, while the Golden Knights prepare for a crucial series of games in their ongoing playoff push.
