LAS VEGAS — A devastating collision late Saturday night in the Spring Valley area sent two young women to the hospital with critical injuries after being hit by a car that ran a red light, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).

The crash happened around 10:54 p.m. on November 8, 2025, at the busy intersection of Mel Torme Way and Spring Mountain Road, an area known for its nightlife and heavy weekend traffic. Police said a 2025 Toyota Camry, driven by 44-year-old Berekat Welday of Las Vegas, was traveling northbound on Mel Torme Way when it entered the intersection against a steady red traffic signal.

At that same time, two pedestrians — later identified as 18-year-old Monika Gomez and 20-year-old Kayla Carrillo, both of Las Vegas — were crossing the intersection in the south crosswalk. Investigators determined that the pair had entered the roadway against the “Don’t Walk” signal.

The front of the Toyota struck both women, throwing them onto the pavement. Witnesses rushed to help as emergency responders arrived within minutes. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue and medical personnel transported the victims to University Medical Center, where Gomez was listed in life-threatening condition and Carrillo in serious but stable condition as of Sunday morning.

Driver Arrested on DUI and Reckless Driving Charges

According to LVMPD’s Traffic Bureau, the driver remained at the scene and immediately cooperated with officers. However, officers noted signs of impairment, and subsequent investigation led to his arrest on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and reckless driving.

Police identified the driver as Berekat Welday, 44, of Las Vegas. He was behind the wheel of a 2025 Toyota Camry with three passengers at the time of the crash:

  • Ronald Collins, 62, of Jennings, Louisiana (no injuries reported)
  • Jeanette Collins, 81, of Welch, Louisiana (no injuries reported)
  • Patricha Green, 75, of West Monroe, Louisiana (no injuries reported)

The vehicle sustained moderate front-end damage. Investigators collected video surveillance and multiple witness statements from nearby businesses and traffic cameras to reconstruct the moments before impact.

Collision Investigation Ongoing

Detectives from the LVMPD Collision Investigation Section are handling the case. They are reviewing surveillance footage and conducting toxicology tests as part of their ongoing investigation.

While the preliminary report indicates both the driver and pedestrians contributed to the circumstances of the crash — the Toyota entering the intersection on red and the pedestrians crossing against the signal — police emphasized that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious traffic crashes in Clark County.

“This incident serves as another tragic reminder of how quickly lives can change when drivers make the decision to get behind the wheel impaired,” an LVMPD spokesperson said.

Authorities continue to urge the public to follow traffic signals and never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
