Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach’s long-awaited sci-fi horror film Iron Lung will officially arrive in theaters Jan. 30, 2026, marking the YouTube star’s feature directorial debut and the start of a self-distribution rollout aimed squarely at independent cinemas nationwide.
The film—based on David Szymanski’s 2022 cult-favorite indie horror game—has been in development for more than two years and has drawn widespread attention for its intense practical effects and bold filmmaking style. Fischbach, one of YouTube’s most recognizable creators, took on nearly every major role behind the scenes, serving as producer, writer, director, editor, financier and lead actor.
Record-Breaking Bloodshed and a Claustrophobic Storyline
Iron Lung has already claimed one distinction before its premiere: Fischbach says the production used more fake blood than any film in history, surpassing even the notoriously gory 2013 remake of Evil Dead.
The story unfolds in a bleak, post-apocalyptic universe after an event known as “The Quiet Rapture,” which causes all stars and habitable planets to vanish without explanation. What remains is a desperate search for survival led by an authoritarian force known as the Consolidation of Iron.
When an “ocean of blood” is detected on a barren moon labeled AT-5, a convict—played by Fischbach—is sealed inside a small, improvised submarine called the Iron Lung. With the front viewport welded shut due to extreme pressure and limited visibility, the mission becomes a harrowing descent into darkness. It is the 13th expedition of its kind, and the convict is promised freedom only if the mission succeeds.
Cast, Crew, and Creative Team
The film features performances from Caroline Rose Kaplan, Troy Baker and Elsie Lovelock. Szymanski, creator of the original game, is also expected to appear in an undisclosed role.
Philip Roy served as cinematographer, and composer Andrew Hulshult crafted the film’s atmospheric score.
Independent Release Strategy
Rather than partnering with a major distributor, Fischbach plans to release Iron Lung himself by working directly with independent theaters across the United States. The opening weekend—Jan. 30 through Feb. 1, 2026—is expected to include 50 to 100 participating cinemas.
A streaming release has not yet been determined.
A Project Delayed but Unbroken
Production and post-production faced significant delays following the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, of which Fischbach is a member. Despite the setbacks, he has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to delivering a theatrical, community-driven experience for fans and horror audiences alike.
With millions of followers and years of anticipation behind it, Iron Lung stands as a major milestone for Fischbach as he steps from digital stardom into the world of feature filmmaking—bringing with him a vision that promises a uniquely grim, claustrophobic and blood-drenched cinematic experience.
