LAS VEGAS (Las Vegas News) — Warner Bros. is heading into the 2026 Academy Awards with a rare advantage — and a rare problem. The studio’s two biggest contenders, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners and Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, are positioned for an all-Warner Bros. showdown in the race for Best Picture.
Sinners enters the ceremony as the leading nominee with 16 Oscar nominations, while One Battle After Another follows with 13, giving Warner Bros. unusual dominance at the top of this year’s field. The concentration of nominations around two films from the same studio has made the company one of the defining storylines of awards season.
The Oscars are set for Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with Conan O’Brien returning as host for a second straight year. The show will air live on ABC and stream on Hulu.
Beyond Best Picture, the ceremony is expected to feature a closely watched Best Actor contest. Michael B. Jordan has emerged as a major contender for Sinners, while the broader acting races remain competitive heading into the final vote count. Jessie Buckley has also been widely cited as a leading Best Actress contender for Hamnet.
This year’s awards season has also underscored a broader industry theme: despite the continuing rise of streaming, the top Best Picture contenders are theatrical releases. At the same time, Hollywood enters the ceremony amid larger uncertainty, including geopolitical tension, anxiety over artificial intelligence and continued consolidation inside the entertainment business. Reuters reported that Warner Bros.’ planned sale to Paramount Skydance is part of the larger unease hanging over the industry.
The Academy Awards are also introducing new wrinkles this year, including a new Best Casting category and a stricter voter accountability measure requiring members to confirm they have watched the nominees in categories where they cast ballots.
For Warner Bros., the biggest question may be whether its awards momentum consolidates behind one film or splits between two. Sinners has the nomination lead and strong visibility after Michael B. Jordan’s recent Actor Awards success, while One Battle After Another has remained firmly in the top tier of the race.
Whatever the outcome, the studio has already secured something harder to manufacture in modern Hollywood: cultural centrality. With two films driving much of the Oscar conversation, Warner Bros. enters the ceremony not just with contenders, but with the season’s clearest in-house rivalry.
